All the Candidates for CBC Houghton Hall Ward (2 seats)

Joe Angell, UK Independence
Alex Butler, Labour
Jimmy Carroll, Independent
Yvonne Farrell, Liberal Democrat
Susan Goodchild, Liberal Democrat
John Kane, Conservative
Ian Purvis, Labour

UK Independence. Joe ANGELL is a local business owner, born in Luton and has lived in Houghton Regis for the last 9yrs. Joe bought his first house in Gilpin Close. Joe got married to his wife in 2015. She is a Houghton born girl. Joe said: I want to see Houghton thrive as a town and if elected will do my best to achieve the changes we all aspire to. More housing brings more challenges. One doctors surgery has never been enough for a town this size and Bedford Square is so dated it will not be long before shops will start to close. We must avoid that with forward planning. These are just a number of challenges that face us all and I am up to the job. (source Houghton Regis UKIP)

Labour. Alex recently stood in the Houghton Hall by-election falling just 8 votes short of being elected. He is a Managing Director of a local Aerial Drone Imagery company. He and his family have a long association with Houghton Regis having successfully managed AFC Dunstable and FC Houghton, reaching the National Cup Final at Villa Park. He believes national and Central Bedfordshire austerity cuts have hugely affected the community he cares so much about. (Source: Labour website)

Independent. Jimmy says, “The old school political parties are unable to deliver at National level. The possible knock-on from this is a complete disregard for local issues. I feel Houghton Hall has some issues which the Party Politic has not been able to grasp.
“I am opposed to the Central Bedfordshire Plan to develop a transitional housing scheme at Windsor Drive. The planned development is far too large for the allocated site. It would be a blight on the area and would stand out as an obvious institutional building. I am not opposed to the scheme idea it's just the chosen site.
“Windsor Dive open space is now under threat from CBC as a possible development site; more housing on open space and a fat profit for CBC. I am also opposed to this idea.
“Houghton Regis is in transition and the whole community need to be involved in all aspects of this transition. I do not wish to see a them-and-us them situation with the new build which is vast and will eventually move Houghton Regis into probably the largest Town in Central Bedfordshire.
“The political parties have argued between themselves for far too long and it's us the Community who have suffered for these arguments.  I hope to bring the Community and Central Bedfordshire together to plan for the future and today.” (source: email)

Liberal Democrat. Yvonne Farrell was born and raised in Sharpenhoe, the daughter of a farmer, and has lived in Houghton Regis since 1989. After early experience in the legal profession, Yvonne became the secretary to a well-known singing group and worked full-time in the entertainment industry. She still acts as an entertainment advisor.
Yvonne was narrowly elected to Houghton Regis Town Council via the by-election in May 2018. Yvonne has taken a keen interest in Environment and Leisure matters and brought her experience to bear on the Events Working Group. Yvonne now sees the opportunity to do more in the field of Community Services. She says, “Becoming a Central Bedfordshire Councillor will enable me to help people even more than at the moment. People’s lives often depend on the services the Council provides, and they need to be guided and helped in the right direction”.
Yvonne is a volunteer with a good neighbour scheme and other local groups and is thankful for the support she received from the community at her time of need. (Source: email)

Liberal Democrat. Susan Goodchild has lived in Houghton Regis for 58 years and feels “embedded into the local community”.

Susan has served on Bedfordshire County and Central Bedfordshire Councils representing Houghton Regis since 2005 and has a special interest in social care, health and housing.  She also serves on the Council’s Corporate Parenting Panel which supports the Council to ensure that it is fulfilling its duties towards those children looked after corporately.

Susan has served as a school governor for many years and is currently the Chair of Governors at Tithe Farm Primary School.  She is also a member of other community groups which include the local speed and street watch schemes, good neighbour scheme and singing cafĂ©.

Susan says “I pride myself on having an exemplary record of listening to and standing up for local residents.  I would like to continue to be a strong local voice especially with regard to the things that matter most to our residents, which include: affordable and appropriate housing in the new developments, ensuring that provision for adult social care remains fit for purpose, and ensuring that there is some parity between our existing town and the new developments.” (Source: email)

Conservative. We did not receive a piece for HRND from John Kane, however, he is the current mayor of Dunstable Town Council, and has served Houghton Hall on Central Bedfordshire Council since 2015.  Chaired a meeting between residents and Arriva spokespeople which lead to the reinstatement of a 38 bus service for Windsor Drive. Personal Facebook Page

Labour. Having recently moved to the local area with his family over a year ago, Ian has run his own business since 1990. He previously lived in Leighton Buzzard, where he took a keen interest in local issues, road improvements and the general upkeep of his local area. He is keen to do the same locally and will listen and act on the resident’s concerns. (Source Labour website)
