Houghton Regis Singing Café Celebrates Award from Morrisons Foundation

  • The Houghton Regis Singing Café is celebrating being awarded a grant from the Morrisons Foundation for £2,560.

The Singing Café is a great place to make friends over a cup of tea and enjoy singing songs we all remember. And it’s a wonderful way to create well-being and stay connected to others. Everyone is welcome and the group looks to support those with dementia and their carers to participate.

The Singing Café  has met in person for many years but went online during the pandemic. The group are looking forward to being able to meet together in person again, but agree it’s been wonderful to see so many succeed in learning to join in via Zoom.

Metey James said, “I love the Singing Café. When my Day Centre closed during the pandemic, it gave me a new purpose and is now a part of my life.”

Part of Chiltern Music therapy, Gareth John delivers live music for the Singing Café every week along with the words to sing along with. He uses music with all sorts of people to develop wellbeing. The Singing Café now meets as a group in person at Houghton Regis Baptist Church and online simultaneously, which allows everybody to get involved.

The Singing Café has been well supported by Morrisons through Sandra Gibb, who is the group's community champion.

The Singing Café is a project delivered by the Community Link Project.  David Skinner commented, “We believe the benefits have been enormous for everyone’s mental health and for the easing of isolation. We are delighted that this has been recognised by the Morrisons Foundation.”

The Morrisons Foundation was set up by Morrisons supermarket in 2015 and awards grants for charity projects which help improve people’s lives.  Since launching, over £33 million has been donated to hundreds of charities across England, Scotland and Wales.  Local charities are encouraged to visit www.morrisonsfoundation.com to find out how to apply for a grant.
