Local Amazon delivery station celebrates first Christmas

  • The Amazon delivery station in Thorn, Houghton Regis, is celebrating its first Christmas. The 10,700 square metre building has been fully operational and serving customers across Dunstable since September.

The delivery station at Thorn Road, Houghton Regis, has created more than 60 permanent jobs since opening, offering competitive pay, comprehensive benefits and leading training and development opportunities in a safe, modern and engaging work environment.

The opening of the delivery station at Houghton Regis has also created new driver opportunities for independent delivery service partners and Amazon Flex delivery partners.

Speaking ahead of the site’s first Christmas, the Amazon Delivery Station Manager, Ankita Majumdar, said, “We’re excited to celebrate our first Christmas. The team at Amazon is ready to deliver for our customers ahead of a great festive shopping season, having also created local job opportunities across a wide range of disciplines in a safe and welcoming environment.”

One of Amazon’s employees who’ll be helping deliver for customers this Christmas is Monica Ciceu.

Monica joined Amazon earlier this year after taking a career break to care for her daughter. Before her career break, Monica worked as a receptionist and when she wanted to return to work, she joined the team at Amazon’s delivery station as a temporary employee, before becoming permanent.

She said, “This is my first experience working at Amazon and I’m really happy in my role. We have a great team here and I love the variety of tasks that my job offers. Of the many benefits at Amazon, my favourite is the flexibility the role gives me in terms of working hours. The schedule fits perfectly with my other responsibilities and duties as a single parent.

“The team is like a big family, and everyone is so supportive. I really appreciate the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing team in a company that offers competitive pay, fantastic benefits and a host of training and development programmes to help me further my career.”

Festive food giveaways, a DJ event and a festive limbo competition are just some of the things taking place throughout November and December as the delivery station team delivers for customers this Christmas.

The delivery station at Thorn Road, Houghton Regis, has a fleet of around 40 Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles as part of Amazon’s zero-carbon commitment.

In 2020, Amazon added more than 1,800 electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans to its EU delivery fleet, including more than 500 in the UK. Small, independent logistics companies who make Amazon deliveries in Dunstable, Luton and Hemel Hempstead have access to around 40 zero-emission vehicles.

Delivery stations power the last mile of Amazon’s order process and help speed up deliveries for customers. Packages are shipped to a delivery station from neighbouring Amazon fulfilment and sortation centres, loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers.

Amazon is also offering entrepreneurs the opportunity to build their own business delivering Amazon packages, as well as independent contractors the flexibility to be their own logistics boss and create their own schedule delivering for Amazon Flex

Amazon employees receive competitive pay and comprehensive benefits. Pay starts at £10.00 or £11.10 per hour depending on location and employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection and an employee discount – which combined are worth more than £700 annually – as well as a company pension plan.

Amazon also offers employees Career Choice, an innovative programme that pre-pays 95% of tuition for courses in high-demand fields, up to £8,000 over four years, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.

Amazon prioritises the safety and health of its people above all else, and the company invested more than $10 billion globally to help keep its people safe and deliver products to customers throughout 2020.
