Traffic Calming proposals For Bidwell area of Houghton Regis

A series of traffic calming measures are proposed for the Bidwell / Thorn area of Houghton Regis. Public consultation on the proposals below closes 12 May 2021. Follow the links in the schemes below for maps and to find out how to comment.

Millard Grange: toucan crossing
Thorn Road: - Priority Narrowing  X 2 (see below) plus a Raised Table (detail below)
30mph Speed Limits affecting:
  • Thorn Road, full length;
  • Grendall Lane, from its junction with Thorn Road and extending in a southeasterly direction for approximately 284metres.
  • Bedford Road (B5120), from its roundabout junction with A5 Link Road and extending in a generally southeasterly direction for approximately1250 metres up to a point approximately 17 metres north-west of its junction with Roslyn Way.
  • Millard Grange, full length.
  • Unnamed Road, south of Millard Grange, full length.

Central Bedfordshire Council, has powers to carry out these works under Section 90 A-I of the Highways Act 1980. Maps associated with these proposals suggest that the whole length of Bedford Road from the A5 dual carriageway to the church may become 30mph in time, if not already.

Thorn Road proposals:

1. A Raised Table at a nominal height of 75mm and approximately 10 metres long, including ramps, extending across the full width of the road is proposed to be sited at Thorn Road, at a point approximately 67 metres north east of its junction with Centurion Way.

2. A Priority Narrowing, comprising a kerb build-out approximately 9 metres long on the south side of the road (traffic proceeding southwest required to give way to opposing traffic) to be sited at Thorn Road, at a point approximately 60 metres northeast of its junction with Pantheon Drive.

3. A Priority Narrowing, comprising a kerb build-out approximately 9 metres long on the north side of the road (traffic proceeding northeast required to give way to opposing traffic) is proposed to be sited at Thorn Road, at a point approximately 199 metres northeast of its junction with Centurion Way.

Comments on any of these public notices should be sent in writing to the Traffic Management team. Further information from the CBC website.
