By-Elections, Houghton Regis Town Council, 6 May 2021

By-elections are taking place in Tithe Farm and Parkside wards of Houghton Regis Town Council on Thursday 6 May 2021. Elections are normally held every 4 years to elect 14 town councillors. These interim by-elections have arisen due to resignations.

The current make-up of the Council is:
Tithe Farm: Independent Community Alliance (1), Labour (2), Vacancy (1)
Parkside: Independent Community Alliance (1), Labour (2), Vacancy (1)
Houghton Hall Ward: Liberal Democrats (6)

Labour - Rigerta Ahmetaj (above) Rigerta meets residents of Houghton Regis daily in the work she does, based in Sandringham Hub. She cares deeply about the wellbeing of local people and that is why she chose to set up the first 3rd party hate crime reporting centre.

Rigerta says I know from the work I do in Houghton Regis there are so many caring, kind, and compassionate people in the community. And as we look forward to better times ahead it is important that we come together to build community cohesion and to work to rebuild a community that we are proud of.

Liberal Democrat - Elaine Cooper
(above) has lived in Elm Park Close on Parkside in Houghton Regis with her Son and Daughter for over 17 years.  She was born in London and has been a bookkeeper also doing secretarial work, and in Houghton Regis worked as a legal consultant.

The welfare of the elderly and the safety of people, particularly females, are all things that concern her. Elaine is a big Football Fan and likes walking, she thinks using local shops is important.

Liberal Democrat -Brendan Gilmartin
(above) has lived in Houghton Regis for over 34 years. Married with four children who went to local schools. He served as a school governor of Thomas Whitehead Lower school for over 10 years. He was treasurer of All Saints, Parochial Church Council for the period of the Church Tower restoration.

Brendan wants local parking to be available to you. He wants to listen to, and respond to, local problems and work to keep Houghton Regis safe. He wants a safe, clean and green Houghton Regis.

Labour - Chris Slough (above) has spent 35 years teaching local young people. Among his local involvement, Chris lists that he is a co-opted member of the Events working group on Houghton Regis Town Council, a director of a local homeless charity, serves on the church council at All Saints, and is involved in a local scout group.

Chris says the last year has been tough, on everyone, and getting back to normal isn't going to be easy, either. That means we must all work together, and continue to look out for one another in the coming months.
