Celebrating Bedfordshire Carers

Central Bedfordshire Council is recognising the work of carers and the significant impact they make to the lives of those they look after as part of Carers Week (8 to 14 June).

The week aims to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

Councillor Carole Hegley, Executive Member for Adults, Social Care, Housing Operations (HRA) and Customer Services, said: “We want to highlight how important carers are and the valuable role they play within our communities. Especially during this lockdown where many of our carers have faced increased challenges and taken on more caring responsibilities for relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older.

“Despite all of this our carers continue to do an amazing job. We also want to recognise our younger carers who look after a disabled or sick parent or sibling. Being a carer is not an easy task even for an adult, so the commitment our young carers show is really inspiring to us all.

“That’s why Carers Week is so important for us to raise awareness of their dedication and hard work. We have unfortunately not been able to get out and about to meet carers as we would normally like to, so I especially hope carers are also looking after themselves and keeping safe.”
