Even You Could Enter! PCC Election Meeting (5 March)

Elections for the position of Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire take place on 7 May 2020.

A meeting for candidates and agents will be held Thursday 5 March in Committee Room 2 at the Town Hall, George St, Luton. Voting is open to anyone resident in Bedfordshire.

Voters must be on the electoral role. If you are over 18 and not on the electoral role should register to vote at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

If you are unsure whether you are already registered to vote you can do so by contacting:

Electoral Registration Officer
Luton Council
Town Hall
George St
01582 510380

As is the case with other elections, those eligible can also vote by proxy (another trusted person to vote on your behalf at the polling station) or by postal vote.

The voting system for the Police and Crime Commissioner is slightly different from usual. Voters will be asked to indicate their preference in two columns. If a candidate fails to secure over 50 per cent of the votes cast in the first column, the two highest candidates will have any votes for them in column two added to their account. Follow this link fo an excellent explanation of this voting system.

If a candidate does secure over 50 per cent of votes in column one they will automatically be elected to the post.

Robin Porter, Chief Returning Officer, Luton Council said: “PCC elections give the public a chance to choose someone to hold their local police force to account. They are an important part of the workings of local democracy and I am pleased to say that Luton Council will be leading on the Bedfordshire-wide elections. I would encourage all those who are eligible to vote to use this opportunity to influence policing in the county for the next four years.”

Due to the bank holiday falling on 8 May this year to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the count will take place on Monday 11 May.
