Waste Park Plan For Thorn Road: Exhibition and Consultation

Consultation starts: March 2015

The consultation closes: 12pm Monday 27th April 2015

About the consultation: Central Bedfordshire Council is proposing to develop a waste park and highways operations hub, to the north-west of Houghton Regis on a site off Thorn Road.

Three main uses are being proposed:

•      a waste transfer station for bulking up and transporting waste collected from residents’ homes;

•      a new Household Waste Recycling Centre - to replace the site at Frenchs Ave, Dunstable;

•       a Highways Depot providing a base for the road maintenance team and the council’s gritting fleet and salt, together with office accommodation and a vehicle maintenance depot and storage area.

The Waste Transfer Station will accept waste and recycling primarily collected at the kerbside from the Central Bedfordshire Council area. The material will then be bulked up and transported in larger vehicles so that recycling can be sent to reprocessing facilities, and residual waste can be sent to treatment facilities. The bulking of waste will greatly reduce the number of waste vehicle movements and help to minimise the environmental impact.

The Household Waste and Recycling Centre will replace the current site at Frenchs Ave, Dunstable, and will provide a raised area where residents can easily deposit waste into skips below. By helping residents to separate items easily, together with longer opening hours, the new site will aim to maximise recycling of waste and reducing the amount of waste that requires treatment.

This proposal would also enable the council to move the existing facilities to one site, allowing land at existing sites to be freed up for potential future development.

The Thorn Turn site is already identified as a strategic waste site in the Council’s Minerals and Waste Local Plan. Before a planning application detailing the design of the site is submitted later this spring, the council and its engineering partner, Atkins, want to hear the views of the local residents.

  1. Waste recycling centers are something that every city should have. There are so many forms of waste, and it is hard to know what to do with them. Construction waste is actually a pretty common type of waste, as there is usually a lot of it. And, a lot of that waste can be potentially recycled. It can just cost a little bit more to recycle, than dumping something at the dump. http://www.macstrashpak.com.au/services

  2. Personally I'd think the waste transfer site a better option. Firstly the household bins collected is taken to Newton longvile and wilstead in Bedford. This is obviously a very long way to tip and tipping at thorn turn would free up time for more and a better collection service due to less travel time and better for the environment.
